Note 1

pray two rak‘ahs

(1) The statement: "pray two rak‘ahs": In (Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar): Among the recommended acts are the two rak‘ahs for travel and upon return. Ash-Shami said: The statement "two rak‘ahs for travel, etc." refers to Miqdam ibn al-Maqdam’s narration: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "No one leaves behind with his family anything better than two rak‘ahs he prays with them when intending to travel." [Narrated by At-Tabarani]. And from Ka‘b ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not return from a journey except during the day, in the forenoon. When he arrived, he would begin at the mosque, pray two rak‘ahs, and then sit there. [Narrated by Muslim]. This indicates that the two rak‘ahs for travel are specific to the home, and the two rak‘ahs upon return are specific to the mosque, as explicitly stated by the Shafi‘is. As stated in (Badhl al-Majhud).
