Commentary and footnotes (4)

Note 1

(1) His statement: some knowledge is ignorance, meaning knowledge that is blameworthy, where ignorance of it is better, or knowledge of what does not concern one, making it ignorance of what does concern one in the end. It is said to refer to learning unnecessary sciences, like astrology or ancient philosophies, while neglecting what is needed for religion, such as the Qur’an and Sunnah. Such preoccupation prevents learning what is necessary, thus becoming ignorance. Al-Azraqi said it refers to not acting upon one’s knowledge, making the lack of action ignorance. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Note 2

(2) His statement: some poetry is wisdom, meaning speech that carries a burden or weight upon the speaker or listener. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Note 1
