Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "A funeral passed by, and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'It has become obligatory.' Then another funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'It has become obligatory.' Umar asked, 'What has become obligatory?' He said, 'This one, you praised him, so Paradise has become obligatory for him. This one, you spoke ill of him, so Hell has become obligatory for him. You are Allah's witnesses on earth.'" [Agreed upon]
In another narration: "The believers are Allah's witnesses on earth."
Al-Hakim narrated something similar, in which the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yes, O Abu Bakr, Allah has angels who speak on the tongues of the children of Adam about the good and evil in a person." Al-Hakim said: "This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim."
