Chapter on Dowry

Zujajat al-Masabih 3291aVolume 2

English

Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I asked Aishah, “What was the dowry of the Prophet (ﷺ)?” She said, “His dowry for his wives was twelve 1 uqiyyahs and a nash.” She said, “Do you know what a nash is?” I said, “No.” She said, “Half an uqiyyah, so that is five hundred dirhams.” Narrated by Muslim. “Nash” is in the nominative case in Sharh as-Sunnah and all primary sources. An-Nasa’i and Abu Dawud narrated from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was married to Abdullah ibn Jahsh, who died in the land of Abyssinia. An-Najashi married her to the Prophet (ﷺ) and gave her a dowry on his behalf of four thousand, in one narration: four thousand dirhams, and sent her to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with Shurahbil ibn Hasanah.

Note 1

Twelve uqiyyahs and a nash

(1) The statement: “Twelve uqiyyahs and a nash”: Due to these Hadiths, it is said in Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar: The minimum dowry is ten dirhams, and more is obligatory if more is specified, as the specification of ten is to prevent reduction.
