Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by two graves and said: "These two are being punished, but they are not being punished for something major. One of them did not protect himself from urine." In another narration of Muslim: "He did not cleanse himself after urination." "The other one used to walk around spreading gossip." Then he took a fresh branch of a date palm, split it in two, and placed one half on each grave. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, why did you do this?" He said: "Perhaps it will lighten their punishment as long as the branches do not dry out." This is agreed upon
