The Chapter on Optimism and Omens

Zujajat al-Masabih 4423Volume 3

English

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Taking omens is polytheism 2, repeating it three times, and none of us is free from it, but Allah removes it through reliance [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]. Muhammad bin Ismail said: Sulayman bin Harb said about this hadith: "None of us is free from it, but Allah removes it through reliance" is, in my view, a statement of Ibn Mas’ud.

Note 2

Taking omens is polytheism

(2) The statement: "Taking omens is polytheism": Because they believed omens brought benefit or repelled harm. Acting on them is as if they associated partners with Allah, called minor polytheism. A commentator said: It means whoever believes something other than Allah independently benefits or harms has committed clear polytheism. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.
