Note 1

Say, ‘And upon you’

(1) His statement: “Say, ‘And upon you’”: An-Nawawi said: “Scholars agree on responding to the People of the Book when they greet, but one should not say, ‘And upon you be peace,’ meaning not ‘Upon you be peace’ or ‘Peace be upon you.’ Rather, say only ‘Upon you’ or ‘And upon you’ for a group, not using the plural for an individual to avoid implying respect.” It is said in Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar: “If a Jew, Christian, or Magian greets a Muslim, there is no harm in responding, but do not exceed saying ‘And upon you,’ as in Al-Khaniyyah.”
