Shurayh ibn Hani, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that when he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with his people, he heard them using the kunyah Abu al-Hakam for him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called him and said, “Allah is the Judge, and to Him belongs judgment. Why are you given the kunyah Abu al-Hakam?” He said, “When my people disagree on something, they come to me, and I judge between them, and both parties are satisfied with my judgment.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “How excellent this is! Who are your children?” He said, “I have Shurayh, Muslim, and Abdullah.” He said, “Who is the eldest?” He said, “Shurayh.” He said, “Then you are Abu Shurayh.”
