Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man insulted Abu Bakr while the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting, marveling and smiling. When the man persisted, Abu Bakr responded with some of his words. The Prophet (ﷺ) became angry and stood up. Abu Bakr followed him and said: “O Messenger of Allah! He was insulting me while you were sitting, but when I responded with some of his words, you became angry and stood up?” He said: “An angel was with you, responding on your behalf. When you responded with some of his words, Satan appeared.” Then he said: “O Abu Bakr, three things are all true: No servant is wronged and overlooks it for Allah’s sake except that Allah strengthens his support; no man opens the door of giving, seeking connection, except that Allah increases his abundance; and no man opens the door of asking, seeking abundance, except that Allah increases his poverty.”
