Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in a prayer and prolonged it. They said: “O Messenger of Allah, you prayed a prayer you did not used to pray.” He said: “Indeed, it was 1 a prayer of hope and fear. I asked Allah for three things in it: He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy my nation with famine, and He granted it. I asked Him not to let an enemy from outside them overcome them, and He granted it. I asked Him not to let some taste the strife of others, and He withheld it.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: “It was a prayer of hope and fear”: This means the prayer combined the intention of hoping for reward and fearing punishment, unlike other prayers where one of these motives may predominate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 1
