Hadith 510

Volume 1

English

And from Ubadah bin al-Samit, he said: We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about urine, and he said: "If anything touches you from it, wash it, for I think it is part of the punishment of the grave." Narrated by Al-Bazzar. And he said in the "Takhrees": Its chain of narration is good. And in the hadith regarding washing clothes from urine once, Ayyub bin Jabir narrated, and they differed on its weakness.

Note 1

Wash it

(1) The statement: "Wash it" — The apparent meaning of the hadith about washing clothes from urine once aligns with what Al-Shafi'i said, that it becomes pure by washing once; because water is purifying, and once it is used, it purifies, just as the body is purified from ritual impurity. Our Hanafi scholars considered strong suspicion, and they determined it should be washed three times; because repetition is necessary for extraction, as mentioned in the hadith of the one who wakes up from sleep; he was commanded to wash three times for imagined impurity, so for actual impurity, it is more applicable. Furthermore, squeezing is required in every wash according to the apparent narration, as squeezing is what extracts the impurity. According to Muhammad, if you wash three times and squeeze on the third time, it becomes purified. "Al-Mirqat" and the extract are selected from both of them. Chapter on the interaction of a person in a state of major impurity (Janabah) and what is permissible for them And Allah's saying: "None touch it except the purified." (Al-Waqi'ah: 79)

Hadith 511

Volume 1

English

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me while I was in a state of major impurity (janabah). He took my hand, and I walked with him until we sat down. I slipped away and went to wash myself. Afterward, I came back, and he was still sitting. He asked, "Where were you, O Abu Huraira?" I replied, and he said, "Glory be to Allah, a believer does not become impure." This is the wording of Al-Bukhari, and Muslim reported a similar meaning. Muslim's narration adds after the statement: "I told him, 'You met me while I was in a state of janabah, and I disliked sitting with you until I performed the purification.'" Al-Bukhari also reported this in another narration.

Hadith 529

Volume 1

English

Narrated Al-Muhajir ibn Qunfudh: He came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was relieving himself, and he greeted him. The Prophet did not respond until he performed ablution, and then he apologized, saying, "I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity." [Narrated by Abu Dawood and Al-Nasa'i, and the latter included the phrase "until he performed ablution." When he did, the Prophet responded to his greeting. Our scholars have concluded that ablution for general remembrance of Allah is recommended. Leaving it is contrary to what is preferred, and it is considered disliked (makruh) in terms of detesting the action.

Hadith 530

Volume 1

English

Narrated Nafi': I went with Ibn Umar on an errand, and when Ibn Umar had completed his task, he narrated a story in which a man passed by the Prophet ﷺ who had just come out of relieving himself. The man greeted him, but the Prophet did not reply until he rubbed his hands on a wall and wiped his face and arms with them. Then, he responded to the greeting, saying, "The only reason I did not respond to your greeting was that I was not in a state of purity." [Narrated by Abu Dawood] Our scholars say that this hadith indicates that tayammum (dry ablution) is allowed for all acts that do not require purification, even if water is available. For actions that do require purification, the absence of water is a condition, such as in the case of reading the Qur'an for an impure person or one who is junub.
