Mutarrif ibn Abdullah ibn Ash-Shikhir, from his father, reported: I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was praying, and his chest was making a sound like the boiling of a pot, meaning he was crying.
In another narration, it is reported: "I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) praying, and his chest was making a sound like the grinding of a millstone due to his crying." [Narrated by Ahmad while Al-Nasa’i narrated the first version, and Abu Dawud narrated the second]
In "Sharh An-Naqayah": The summary is that groaning or crying with sound, if it is not related to the Hereafter—such as due to pain or a calamity—invalidates the prayer because it shows distress and impatience, as if one is saying, "Help me." However, if it is related to the Hereafter—such as out of fear or hope—it does not invalidate the prayer, as it is like supplication and praise.
