Al-Bara’ ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) made a truce with the polytheists on the day of Hudaybiyyah on three conditions: that whoever came to him from the polytheists would be returned to them, whoever came to them from the Muslims would not be returned, and that he would enter it the following year and stay for three days. When he entered it and the term expired, he left. The daughter of Hamzah followed him, calling out: “O uncle, O uncle!” Ali took her and held her hand. Ali, Zayd, and Ja‘far disputed over her. Ali said: “I took her, and she is my cousin’s daughter.” Ja‘far said: “She is my cousin’s daughter, and her maternal aunt is my wife.” Zayd said: “She is my brother’s daughter.” The Prophet (ﷺ) ruled in favor of her maternal aunt and said: “The maternal aunt is like the mother.” He said to Ali: “You are from me, and I am from you.” He said to Ja‘far: “You resemble my appearance and my character.” He said to Zayd: “You are our brother and our freedman.”
