Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever kills a sparrow or anything above it without its right, 1 Allah will ask him about its killing.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is its right?” He said: “To slaughter it and eat it, not to cut off its head and throw it away.”

Note 1
(1) The statement: “Whoever kills a sparrow or anything above it without its right, etc.”: In “Nayl al-Awtar,” it indicates the prohibition of killing a sparrow or similar for mere sport. Thus, in “Al-Durr al-Mukhtar,” it is permissible to hunt what is edible for its meat or what is inedible for its skin, hair, feathers, or to repel its harm, all legislated by the general text: And when you are lawful [from ihram], then hunt (Qur’an 5:2).
