Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he mentioned the Hadith at length until he said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, advise me.” He said: “I advise you to fear Allah, for it is the adornment of all your affairs.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Recite the Qur’an and remember Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, for it is a light for you in the heavens and on earth.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Observe prolonged silence except for good, for it drives away Satan and aids you in your religion.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Avoid excessive laughter, for it deadens the heart and removes the light from the face.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Do not fear the blame of any critic in the cause of Allah.” I said, “Add more.” He said: “Let what you know of your own faults 1 prevent you from [focusing on] the faults of others.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: “Let what you know of your own faults prevent you from [focusing on] the faults of others”: meaning, let your awareness of your own shortcomings deter you from focusing on others’ flaws, as narrated by Anas, reported by Ad-Daylami: “Blessed is the one whose own faults preoccupy him from the faults of others.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
