English

Awf narrated from Abu Raja’ from Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him): We were traveling with the Prophet (ﷺ), and the people complained to him of thirst. He dismounted and called a man—whom Abu Raja’ named but Awf forgot—and Ali. He said: “Go and seek water.” They went and met a woman between two water skins 1 or two flat leather bags of water. They brought her to the Prophet (ﷺ), who had her dismount from her camel. He called for a vessel and poured from the mouths of the water skins into it. It was announced to the people: “Drink and quench your thirst.” He said: We, forty thirsty men, drank until we were satisfied. We filled every water skin and container we had. By Allah, when we finished, it seemed to us that her water skins were fuller than when we began.

Note 1

flat leather bags,

(1) His statement: water skins: With a fatha on the mim, meaning she was riding between two containers, originally for provisions. Or “flat leather bags,” as the judge said: a type of water skin made of two pieces of leather, one placed against the other and flattened. Al-Jazari said: It is smaller than a water skin. His statement: of water: Clarifies their contents. His statement: we drank, thirsty: With a kasra on the first letter, the plural of thirsty, a state describing the subject of “we drank.” “Forty men” specifies their number, as noted by At-Tibi. His statement: it was emptied from her: In the passive voice, meaning the group ceased taking from the water skin and withdrew. His statement: fuller: With a kasra on the mim and a fatha or sukoon on the lam, a noun from “filled the vessel.” His statement: when it began: Means it appeared to have more water than when they started drawing from it. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
