Narrated Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: "Do not make things difficult for yourselves, for Allah will make things difficult for you. A people made things difficult for themselves, so Allah made things difficult for them. That is why their remnants are found in their monasteries and their homes, a form of monasticism they innovated, which We did not prescribe for them."

١٧٢ - وَعَنْ أَنَسٍ (رضي الله عنه): أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُوْلُ: «لَا تُشَدِّدُوْا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ فَيُشَدِّدُ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ؛ فَإِنَّ قَوْمًا شَدَّدُوْا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهُمْ ، فَشَدَّدَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَتِلْكَ بَقَايَاهُمْ في الصَّوَامِعِ وَالدِّيَارِ، رَهْبَانِيَّةً ابْتَدَعُوْهَا، مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.

کرتے تھے کہ (دین کے بارے میں) اپنے اوپر سختی نہ کرو کہ اللہ تعالیٰ بھی تم پر سختی کرے گا، چنانچہ ایک
قوم نے اپنے اوپر سختی کر لی تو اللہ نے ان پر اس کو سخت ہی کر دیا، چنانچہ گرجا گھروں میں اور یہود کے
عبادت خانوں میں ان کے باقی ماندہ لوگ ہی تو ہیں کہ انہوں نے رہبانیت (دنیا سے بے تعلقی) کو
خود ایجاد کر لیا جس کو اللہ نے ان پر لازم نہیں کیا تھا۔ (اس کی روایت ابوداؤد نے کی ہے)۔
