Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Prophet (ﷺ) was brought food, he would ask whether it was a gift or charity. If it was said to be charity, he would tell his companions: “Eat,” but he would not eat. If it was said to be a gift, he would stretch out his hand and eat with them.
