Ikrimah reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: "Asking (al-mas'alah) is to raise your hands opposite your shoulders or near them. Seeking forgiveness (al-istighfar) is to point with one finger. Earnest supplication (al-ibtihal) is to stretch both hands fully." In another narration: He said, "Al-ibtihal is like this," and he raised his hands with their backs facing his face.

Note 1
(1) The statement: "Point with one finger," etc. It is mentioned in al-'Alamgiriyyah under the chapter of Istisqa (rain-seeking prayer): "During supplication, if one raises his hands toward the sky, it is good. If he leaves that and points with his index finger, it is also good. Similarly, people often raise their hands because the Sunnah in supplication is to extend both hands." This is quoted from al-Mudmarat.
Note 1
