Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Among the Children of Israel was a man who killed ninety-nine people. Then he went out seeking repentance and came to a monk, asking, ‘Is there any repentance for me?’ The monk said, ‘No,’ so the man killed him, completing his hundredth murder. He continued searching until a man told him, ‘Go to such-and-such town.’ Death overtook him on the way, so he turned his chest toward the town. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Allah commanded the town to draw nearer and the other to move away, then said, ‘Measure the distance between them.’ He was found to be a handspan closer to the town of repentance, so he was forgiven."
