Opening narrations

Zujajat al-Masabih 2986Volume 2

English

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) designated Dhat 'Irq as the Miqat for the people of Iraq. [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasa'i with a sahih chain, as stated by Imam Nawawi] Imam Qurtubi authenticated it, while Dhahabi said: "It is sahih gharib." Bayhaqi noted: "Its chain contains unknown narrators," but the author of 'Uqud al-Jawahir al-Munifah refuted this, stating: "If some narrators were unknown to him, they were known to others." Shafi'i narrated it with a hasan chain from 'Ata' as mursal. Abu Dawud remained silent about it, which indicates its acceptability as evidence. Daruqutni also narrated it with a chain meeting Bukhari's standards. Our Imam Abu Hanifah, Tahawi, Ibn 'Adi, 'Abdurrazzaq, and Bazzar reported similar narrations.

Note 1

He designated...

(1) The statement: "He designated..." – Hanafis hold that five Miqats (including Dhat 'Irq for Iraqis) were established by the Prophet (ﷺ), though Dhat 'Irq was publicly announced later by 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Shafi'is argue it was initiated by 'Umar. Al-Arf ash-Shadhi cites this.

Note 2

Dhat 'Irq

(2) The statement: "Dhat 'Irq" – A seemingly contradictory narration in Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi (graded hasan) states Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported the Prophet (ﷺ) designated Al-'Aqiq for easterners. Scholars reconciled this by noting Dhat 'Irq was originally located at Al-'Aqiq's site before being moved closer to Makkah. Others considered Ibn Abbas' narration abrogated, as Dhat 'Irq's designation occurred during the Farewell Hajj. Fath al-'Allam and Nayl al-Awtar discuss this.

Note 3

Narrated by Abu Dawud...

(3) The statement: "Narrated by Abu Dawud..." – The Hadith has supporting chains in Ibn Majah and others, collectively strengthening its authenticity. Fath al-'Allam affirms this.

Note 4

With a sahih chain...

(4) The statement: "With a sahih chain..." – 'Uqud al-Jawahir al-Munifah confirms this.
