Commentary and footnotes (2)

Note 3

Chess is the gambling of non-Arabs

(3) The statement: "Chess is the gambling of non-Arabs": Based on these hadiths, in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: Playing dice is prohibitively disliked, as is chess. Shafi’i permitted it. In Al-Mirqat: Shafi’i’s evidence is that it may aid in understanding war tactics and enemy strategies. I say: This reasoning is weak, and this interpretation is poor given the texts condemning it and the lack of evidence of the Prophet’s companions playing it. Betting on chess is unanimously prohibited.
