Ata ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), “Should I seek permission from my mother?” He said, “Yes.” The man said, “I live with her in the house.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Seek permission from her.” The man said, “I am her servant.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Seek permission from her. Would you like to see her naked?” He said, “No.” He said, “Then seek permission from her.” [Narrated by Malik, mursal]
Muhammad said in Al-Muwatta: “This is what we follow. Seeking permission is good, and a man should seek permission 1 from anyone whose private parts he is prohibited from seeing or the like.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: “A man should seek permission from anyone whose private parts he is prohibited from seeing”: This applies even to his close relatives, but not to his wife or slave girl. As stated in At-Ta‘liq al-Mumajjad. It is said in Al-Alamgiriyyah: “Abu Hanifah and Abu Yusuf said that one does not enter upon his mother, daughter, or sister except with permission, but for his wife, he offers the greeting and does not seek permission.” As stated in At-Tatarkhaniyyah.
