English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever stands from his seat 1 and then returns to it is more entitled to it.” [Narrated by Muslim] Abu Dawud narrated from Abu ad-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him): “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat, and we sat around him, if he stood intending to return, he would remove his sandals or something he was wearing, so his Companions would know and remain in place.”

Note 1

and then returns to it is more entitled to it

(1) His statement: “and then returns to it is more entitled to it”: It is said in Al-Mirqat: “It is apparent that if he leaves nothing in the seat, his claim to it lapses, reverting to its original permissible state. This is supported by what follows, that he (ﷺ) would remove his sandals when he stood intending to return, as in the Hadith.”
