Zujajat al-Masabih 4581Volume 4

English

Bashir ibn Maymun, from his uncle Usamah ibn al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that a man named Asram was among those who came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “What is your name?” He said, “Asram.” He said, “Rather, you are Zur‘ah.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud] He said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) changed the names Al-‘As, Aziz 1, Atalah, Shaytan, Al-Hakam, Ghurab, Hubab, and Shihab.” He said, “I omitted their chains for brevity.”

Commentary and footnotes (3)

Note 1

Aziz

(1) His statement: “Aziz”: Because it is one of Allah’s names, it should be Abdul-Aziz, as a servant is described with humility and submission, while might belongs to Allah. Similarly, one should not be named Hamid, as it is one of Allah’s names and attributes in an intensive form; rather, Abdul-Hamid and the like. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Note 2

and Shihab

(2) His statement: “and Shihab”: It appears that if added to something like religion, it is not disliked. As stated in Al-Mirqat.
