Chapter on Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

Zujajat al-Masabih 4937Volume 4

English

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When the Children of Israel fell into sins, their scholars forbade them, but they did not stop. So, they sat with them in their gatherings, ate with them, and drank with them. Allah struck the hearts of some with others and cursed them on the tongues of Dawud and Isa ibn Maryam: ‘That was because they disobeyed and transgressed.’” He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was reclining, then sat up and said: “No, by the One in Whose hand is my soul, until you compel them to the truth!” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud] In another narration by him: “No, by Allah, you must enjoin good, forbid evil, seize the hand of the oppressor, compel him to the truth, and confine him to the truth, or Allah will strike the hearts of some of you with others and curse you as He cursed them.”
