English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he said: “O Messenger of Allah, while I was in my house at my prayer place, a man entered and I was pleased 1 with the state he saw me in.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Hurairah. You have two rewards: the reward of secrecy and the reward of openness.”

Note 1

I was pleased with the state

(1) His statement: “I was pleased with the state” – the clearer meaning is that his pleasure aligns with natural disposition and Shariah, as he is pleased that someone saw him in a good state and dislikes being seen in a bad one, without intending to show off or seek reputation. This is like the narration from Abu Musa by At-Tabarani: “Whoever is pleased with his good deed and displeased with his bad deed is a believer.” Allah said: Say: In the bounty of Allah and His mercy, let them rejoice; it is better than what they amass (Yunus: 58). A believer rejoices in being enabled to do good deeds, unlike others who rejoice in amassing wealth. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
