English

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The heaven creaks, and it is right to creak. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, there is no space of four fingers in it except that an angel is placing his forehead in prostration to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh 1 little and weep much, and you would not find pleasure with women on beds. Instead, you would go out to the open spaces, crying out to Allah.” Abu Dharr said: “Would that I were a tree cut down.”

Note 1

you would weep much and laugh little

(1) His statement: “you would weep much and laugh little” – weeping is the fruit of the tree of a living heart enlivened by Allah’s remembrance, feeling His greatness, awe, and majesty. Laughter is the result of a heedless heart. This clarifies the truth, urging people to seek a living heart and seek refuge from a heedless one. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
