Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The angels were created from light, the jinn were created 1 from a smokeless flame of fire, and Adam was created from what has been described to you.”

(1) His statement: “and the jinn were created from a smokeless flame”: Al-Hakim At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya in Maka’id Ash-Shaytan, Abu Ash-Shaykh in Al-Adhamah, and Ibn Mardawayh narrated from Abu Darda, who elevated it: Allah, Mighty and Exalted, created the jinn in three categories: one category as snakes, scorpions, and creeping things of the earth; another as wind-like in the air; and a third subject to reckoning and punishment. And He created humans in three categories: one like beasts, another with the bodies of the children of Adam but the souls of devils, and a third in the shade of Allah on a day when there is no shade but His. His statement: “and a third subject to reckoning and punishment” alludes to Abu Hanifa’s stance and his hesitation regarding the jinn’s reward, and Allah, the Exalted, knows best. (۱) قوله: وخلق الجان من مارج وروى الحكيم الترمذي وابن أبي الدنيا في مكايد الشيطان» وأبو الشيخ في «العظمة» وابن مردويه عن أبي الدرداء رفعه : خلق الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الجن ثلاثة أصناف، صنف حيات وعقارب وخشاش الأرض، وصنف كالريح في الهواء، وصنف عليهم الحساب والعقاب وخلق الله الإنس ثلاثة أصناف، صنف كالبهائم، وصنف أجسادهم أجساد بني آدم وأرواحهم أرواح الشياطين، وصنف في ظل الله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله. وفي قوله: وصنف عليهم الحساب والعقاب إيماء إلى قول أبي حنيفة وتوقفه في حق الجن بالثواب، والله تعالى أعلم بالصواب. كذا في «المرقاة».
