Riz ibn Hubaish narrated that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “By the One Who split the seed and created the soul, it is the covenant 1 of the unlettered Prophet (ﷺ) to me that none will love me except a believer, and none will hate me except a hypocrite.” [Narrated by Muslim] Ibn Adi narrated from Anas: “Love for Abu Bakr and Umar is faith, and hatred for them is hypocrisy.”

(1) His statement “it is the covenant of the unlettered Prophet (ﷺ) to me”: meaning he emphasized and stressed it to Ali as if it were a covenant. His statement “none will love me” means none will love me with a lawful, appropriate love, without excess or deficiency, excluding the Nusayri and Khariji, except a believer, meaning one with complete faith. Thus, one who loves him but hates the two Shaykhs, for example, does not love him with a lawful love. His statement “except a hypocrite” means in reality or by ruling. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(۱) قوله: لعهد النبي الأمي ﷺ إلي : أي أكد ذلك وبالغ علي حتى كأنه عهد. وقوله: «أن لا يحبني» والمعنى لا يحبني حبا مشروعا مطابقا للمواقع من غير زيادة ونقصان ليخرج النصيري والخارجي، إلا مؤمن أي كامل الإيمان، فمن أحبه وأبغض الشيخين مثلا فما أحبه حبا مشروعا أيضًا. وقوله: «إلا منافق أي حقيقة أو حكما. كذا في «المرقاة».

(9) قوله لعهد النبي الامي صلى الله عليه وسلم اليّ (مجھ سے نبی امی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عہد فرمایا)یعنی مجھے اس بات کو یہاں تک تاکید اور مبالغہ کے ساتھ فرمایا گویا آپ نے مجھ سے عہد فرمایا ہو ”ان لا يحبني“ (کہ مجھ سے محبت نہیں کرے گا)یعنی مجھ سے کسی کی بیشی کے بغیر جائز اور واقع کے مطابق محبت نہیں تا کہ کرے گا نصیری اور خارجی نکل جائے۔ ”الا مؤمن“ (مگر مومن) یعنی کامل الایمان والا تو جس نے آپ سے محبت کی اور شیخین سے دشمنی رکھی مثال کے طور پر تو اُس نے بھی آپ جائز محبت نہیں کی، ”الا منافق“، (مگر منافق)یعنی حقیقی یا حکمی منافق۔(مرقات)
