Chapter on Purification of Impurities

Zujajat al-Masabih 597aVolume 1

English

From Abdullah bin Hakim: He said, "We received a letter from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbidding the use of leather from dead animals or bones." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Tahaawi] Regarding this, al-Bayhaqi said: "This is evidence against benefiting from the skin of dead animals before it is tanned," and Ibn Hibban mentioned it in his Sahih. In Abu Dawood, Al-Nadr bin Shumail said: "What is called ‘Ihaab’ is what has not been tanned, and once it is tanned, it is no longer called ‘Ihaab,’ and it is known as leather or a bag."
