Hadith 5698

English

Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever falsely attributes to me what I did not say, let him take his seat in the Fire.” This was because 1 he sent a man who lied about him, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) invoked against him, and he was found dead with his belly split open, and the earth did not accept him.

[Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Dala’il an-Nubuwwah]

Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We went out with the Prophet (ﷺ) until we reached Usfan 1 and stayed there for some nights. The people said, “We are not here for any purpose, and our families are left behind; we are not secure about them.” This reached the Prophet (ﷺ), and he said, “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, there is no path or passage in Madinah except that two angels are guarding it until you return to it.” Then he said, “Move on.” So we set out and headed to Madinah. By the One Who is sworn by, we had not yet set down our loads upon entering Madinah when the Banu Abdullah ibn Ghatafan raided us, and nothing had provoked them before this.

Commentary and footnotes (8)

Unnumbered commentary

for any purpose

His statement “for any purpose”: meaning for any task or matter of war. His statement “left behind”: meaning women without men, as a tribe is called khaluf when only women remain, and this is a circumstantial clause.

we are not secure about them

His statement “we are not secure about them”: meaning about our families, a second predicate. The masculine pronoun may be used for predominance or to liken them to men in resilience and bravery.

path

His statement “path”: a way in the mountain. His statement “passage”: a path between mountains.

guarding it

His statement “guarding it”: the pronoun refers to Madinah, meaning its paths and passages. I say: it likely refers to all of them.

we had not set down our loads

His statement “we had not set down our loads”: meaning our belongings from the backs of our camels upon entering Madinah, when the Banu Abdullah ibn Ghatafan, with a fathah on the kha and a sukun on the ta, raided us, meaning the people of Madinah. The meaning is that Madinah was protected during their absence, as the Prophet (ﷺ) informed them miraculously, and nothing prevented the raid except the angels’ guarding. This is the meaning of “nothing had provoked them before this.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 1

Usfan

(1) His statement “Usfan”: with a dammah on the first letter, as in Al-Qamus: Usfan, like Uthman, is a place two stages from Makkah.

Note 1

Note 1

Hadith 5701

Volume 5

English

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A famine struck the people during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). While the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday sermon, a Bedouin stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, our wealth 1 has perished, and our families are starving; pray to Allah for us.” He raised his hands, and we saw no trace of clouds in the sky. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he had not lowered them before clouds rose like mountains. He did not descend from his pulpit until I saw rain dripping from his beard. It rained that day, the next, and the day after until the following Friday. Then that Bedouin 2, or another, stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the buildings have collapsed, and the wealth 3 has drowned; pray to Allah for us.” He raised his hands and said, “O Allah, around us and not upon us.” Wherever he pointed at the clouds, they parted, and Madinah became like 4 an opening in the sky. The valley of Qanat flowed for a month, and no one came from any direction 5 without reporting abundant rain. In another narration, he said, “O Allah, around us and not upon us, O Allah, upon 6 the hills, the mountains, the valley bottoms, and the places where trees grow.” He said: Then the clouds cleared, and we walked in the sun.

Commentary and footnotes (13)

Note 1

our wealth has perished

(1) His statement “our wealth has perished”: meaning livestock, as it was most of their wealth, perishing either by deterioration or death. His statement “trace of clouds”: meaning a piece of cloud. His statement “he had not lowered them”: meaning his hand, with the pronoun singular considering the generic sense. His statement “clouds rose”: meaning the clouds appeared fully. His statement “dripping”: meaning the rain was falling. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 2

Then that Bedouin, or another

(2) His statement “Then that Bedouin, or another”: Al-Hafiz al-Asqalani said: In one narration, “Then a man entered the following Friday,” suggesting it was someone else. In another, “Until that Bedouin came the next Friday,” indicating it was the same person. Perhaps Anas mentioned it after forgetting or forgot after mentioning it. I say: It is possible he was uncertain whether the second person was the first, sometimes assuming it was him and stating it definitively, sometimes assuming it was another and using indefinite terms, and sometimes expressing doubt, as both possibilities were equal to him. The doubt is his, not another’s. Allah knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 3

the wealth has drowned

(3) His statement “the wealth has drowned”: with a kasrah on the ra, meaning it became submerged. His statement “O Allah, around us”: meaning let it rain around us—lam with fathah—where it benefits us. He reinforced it with “and not upon us,” meaning not where it harms us. Al-Asqalani said: “and not upon us” explains “around us.” An-Nawawi said: It is recommended to pray for rain to stop from homes and facilities when it becomes excessive and harmful, but no prayer or gathering in the desert is prescribed for this. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 4

like an opening in the sky

(4) His statement “like an opening in the sky”: an opening is a gap in the clouds; an implied term is omitted, meaning the sky of Madinah became like a gap in the clouds, free of them. His statement “the valley of Qanat”: some commentaries state Qanat is the name of a land with farms near Uhud, one of Madinah’s famous valleys. In this narration, Qanat has a dammah as a substitute or clarification. (As stated in Al-Lama’at) And in Al-Mirqat: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Makhzumi mentioned in Akhbar al-Madinah that Tubba‘ al-Yamani named it Wadi Qanat when he came to Yathrib before Islam. It is said to be the valley near Hamzah’s grave, coming from Taif.

Note 5

from any direction

(5) His statement “from any direction”: meaning from any side of Madinah, and they reported abundant rain. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 6

upon the hills

(6) His statement “upon the hills”: plural of hill, meaning elevated land. His statement “the mountains”: small mountains, singular being a small mountain. His statement “valley bottoms”: meaning areas free of buildings. His statement “places where trees grow”: meaning fruit-producing places. His statement “the clouds cleared”: meaning they dispersed and stopped raining, with feminine form due to the plural of cloud, as in Allah’s words: O sky, cease [Hud: 44]. (As stated in Al-Lama’at and Al-Mirqat)

Note 1

May you not be able

(1) His statement “May you not be able”: a supplication against him because he lied in his excuse. His statement “Nothing prevented him but pride”: meaning not inability. At-Tibi said: This is the narrator’s statement, explaining why the Prophet (ﷺ), the mercy to the worlds, invoked against him, saying: He was not prevented from eating with his right hand by inability but by pride. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

were alarmed

(1) His statement “were alarmed”: meaning they feared an enemy’s attack once. His statement “moved haltingly”: meaning it walked with short steps, as mentioned by the commentator. His statement “your horse to be a sea”: meaning swift, called a sea because its running was inexhaustible, like the sea’s water. At-Tibi said: It is the second object of “we found.” The horse was likened to a sea in the vastness of its stride and speed. His statement “never outrun”: meaning it could not be matched or surpassed in running. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Hadith 5704

Volume 5

English

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a camel 1 of ours that was exhausted and could hardly move. The Prophet (ﷺ) caught up with me and said, “What is wrong with your camel?” I said, “It is exhausted.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lagged behind, rebuked it, and prayed for it. It then kept moving ahead of the camels, leading them. He said to me, “How do you find your camel?” I said, “In good condition, your blessing has reached it.” He said, “Will you sell it to me for a wuqiyyah?” I sold it to him on the condition that I could ride its back to Madinah. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah, I came to him in the morning with the camel. He gave me its price and returned it to me. [Agreed Upon] The Shaykh said in Al-Lama’at: His statement “I sold it on the condition that I could ride its back to Madinah” indicates the permissibility of a condition benefiting the seller. The jurists ruled it impermissible because it is a condition not required by the contract and benefits one party. If riding its back to Madinah were part of the price, it would be a lease within a sale; if not, it would be a loan within a sale. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade two transactions in one and a sale with a condition. Thus, the contract is invalid. They said: This statement in this Hadith is abrogated, which is the correct view, or it was not part of the contract’s core but requested after the sale, though the apparent wording contradicts this.

Note 2

Hadith 5705

Volume 5

English

Ya‘la ibn Murrah ath-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I saw three things from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). While we were traveling with him, we passed a camel being used for irrigation 1. When the camel saw him, it bellowed, lowered its neck, and the Prophet (ﷺ) stood over it and said, “Where is the owner of this camel?” The owner came, and he said, “Sell it to me.” He said, “Rather, I gift it to you, O Messenger of Allah, but it is the only livelihood of a household.” He said, “Since you mention this, it complained of excessive work and little fodder; treat it well.” Then we traveled until we stopped at a place, and the Prophet (ﷺ) slept. A tree came, splitting the ground, until 2 it shaded him, then returned to its place. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) awoke, I mentioned it to him, and he said, “It was a tree that sought its Lord’s permission to greet the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and He permitted it.” He said: Then we traveled and passed by a water source, where a woman brought her son, who was possessed. The Prophet (ﷺ) took him by the nose and said, “Come out, for I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.” He said: Then we traveled, and when we returned and passed that water source, he asked her about the boy. She said, “By the One Who sent you with the truth, we have seen no trouble from him since you left.”
