English

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "Who is a pilgrim (hajj)?" He replied: "One with disheveled hair and covered in dust." Another asked: "Which Hajj is best?" He said: "Raising one’s voice (in talbiyah) and shedding blood (in sacrifice)." A third asked: "What is 'a way'?" He answered: "Provisions and a mount."

Commentary and footnotes (6)

Note 1

Disheveled hair and covered in dust

(1) "Disheveled hair and covered in dust" prohibits using oil (as stated in Al-Hidayah) and perfume (as it causes unpleasant odor). (Fath al-Qadir)

Note 2

Which Hajj is best?

(2) "Which Hajj is best?" refers to the best form of Hajj, not its best acts (e.g., tawaf and standing at Arafah are superior). (Radd al-Muhtar)

Note 3

Raising one’s voice and shedding blood

(3) "Raising one’s voice and shedding blood" means loud talbiyah (a sunnah; omitting it is disliked but not sinful) and sacrificing animals. (Radd al-Muhtar, Fath al-Qadir)

Note 1

Note 2
