Zujajat al-Masabih 3119Volume 2

English

Wabarah reported: "I asked Ibn Umar when to stone the pillars. He said: 'When your leader stones, then stone.' I repeated the question, and he said: 'We used to watch - when the sun passed the zenith, we would stone.'" [Narrated by Bukhari] In Al-Bayhaqi's version from Ibn Abbas: "When the day has advanced on the Day of Departure, stoning and departing become permissible."

Note 1

When the day has advanced

(1) "When the day has advanced" means when the sun is high. The Prophet's (ﷺ) action is understood as the optimal practice, while the permissibility is established by the Qur'anic verse. Comparing it to the second and third days is weak because stoning cannot be omitted those days. (Al-Binayah)
