Hadith 108

Volume 1

English

Narrated by Ibn al-Dailami: I went to Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Something related to predestination has occurred in my heart, so tell me something that might remove it from my heart." He said: "If Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, were to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and the inhabitants of His earth, He would punish them, and He would not wrong them. And if He had mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. If you were to spend a mountain of gold in the way of Allah, He would not accept it from you until you believe in predestination and know that whatever befalls you could not have missed you, and whatever missed you could not have befallen you. If you were to die without this belief, you would enter Hell." I then went to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said something similar. Then I went to Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said something similar. Then I went to Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated to me from the Prophet (peace be upon him) something similar.

Hadith 109

English

Narrated by Nafi': A man came to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "So-and-so sends you greetings." Ibn Umar replied: "I have heard that he has committed an innovation (bid'ah). If he has done so, do not convey my greeting to him. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'There will be in my Ummah (or in this Ummah) an earthquake, transformation, and a stone-throwing for the people of Qadar.'"

Hadith 111

Volume 1

English

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and from his back fell every soul that He would create from his descendants until the Day of Judgment. He placed between the eyes of each of them a light. Then He displayed them to Adam. Adam said: 'O Lord, who are these?' Allah replied: 'These are your descendants.' He saw a man among them and was impressed by the light between his eyes. Adam said: 'O Lord, who is this?' Allah replied: 'This is Dawood.' Adam said: 'O Lord, how long did You decree his life to be?' Allah said: 'Sixty years.' Adam said: 'O Lord, increase his life by forty years from mine.'" (The narration continues in the original text, explaining how the matter is resolved regarding the extension of Dawood's life.) The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Adam's life came to an end, except for forty years, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said: 'Hasn't there remained forty years of my life?' The angel replied: 'Did you not give it to your son Dawood?' Adam denied it, and his descendants also denied it. Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot. Adam made a mistake, and his descendants made a mistake."

Narrated by Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "When Allah created Adam, He struck his right shoulder, and from it He brought forth a white progeny, like grains of sand. Then He struck his left shoulder, and from it He brought forth a black progeny, like masses of charcoal. He said to the ones on the right: 'To Paradise, and I do not care.' And He said to the ones on the left: 'To the Fire, and I do not care.'"

Hadith 113

Volume 1

English

Narrated by Abu Nadrah (may Allah be pleased with him): A man from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), known as Abu Abdullah, was visited by his companions while he was crying. They asked him: "Why are you crying? Did not the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'Take from your beard, and keep it until you meet Me'?" He replied: "Yes, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, took one handful of creation with His right hand, and another with His other hand, and He said: 'This is for this, and this is for that, and I do not care.' I do not know which of the two handfuls I am in.'"

Volume 1

English

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah took the covenant from the back of Adam at Namaan (meaning Arafat) and He brought forth from his loins all his descendants, scattering them before him like grains of sand. Then He addressed them saying: 'Am I not your Lord?' They replied: 'Yes, indeed!' He said: 'Do not say on the Day of Resurrection: "We were unaware of this," or "Our forefathers before us associated others with You, and we were their descendants. Will You destroy us for what the wrongdoers did?"' (Surah Al-A'raf: 172-173)"

Hadith 115

Volume 1

English

Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said about the verse of Allah: "And when your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants" (Surah Al-A'raf: 172), that Allah gathered them, turned them into spirits, and then He formed them. He made them speak, and they responded. Then Allah took the covenant and the oath from them and made them testify upon themselves: "Am I not your Lord?" He said: "I will bear witness to you, the seven heavens and the seven earths, and I will also bear witness to your father, Adam, that you will not say on the Day of Judgment: 'We were unaware of this.' Know that there is no deity except Me, and no Lord other than Me, and do not associate anything with Me. I will send My messengers to remind you of My covenant and oath, and I will send down My books upon you." They said, "We bear witness that You are our Lord and our God. There is no Lord for us other than You, and no God for us other than You." They acknowledged this, and Adam looked at them. He saw the rich and the poor, those of good appearance and others less so. Adam then said, "My Lord, why did You not make all of Your servants equal?" Allah replied, "I loved to be thanked." Then Adam saw the Prophets among them, shining like lamps, with light upon them. They were chosen with another covenant in the message and prophethood. This is as Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: "And when We took the covenant from the Prophets..." up to His saying, "And Jesus, the son of Mary" (Al-Ahzab: 7). These souls were present, and He sent them to Maryam (Mary). It is narrated from Ubayy that he entered through her.

Hadith 116

Volume 1

English

Narrated by Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him): While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), discussing what would happen in the future, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When you hear about a mountain being moved from its place, believe it. But when you hear about a man changing his character, do not believe it; for he will return to what he was originally created for."
