Hadith 1147

On his authority, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The imam is appointed to be followed, so when he says the takbir, say the takbir; and when he recites, listen attentively." [Narrated by Abu Dawud, Al-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah] This is an authentic hadith, and At-Tahawi narrated a similar report. In a narration of Muslim from Abu Huraira and Qatadah: "And when he recites, listen attentively." In another narration of his: "And when he says, , say Ameen." Ali Al-Qari said: "This implies the necessity of silence and listening." It was said: "This indicates that the follower does not recite Al-Fatihah; otherwise, it would have been more appropriate to say: 'When one of you says , then say Ameen.'"
