Chapter on Affirmation of the Punishment of the Grave

Zujajat al-Masabih 119Volume 1

English

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When the servant is placed in his grave, and his companions turn away from him, he hears the sound of their footsteps. Then, two angels come to him and make him sit, and they ask him: 'What did you say about this man (Muhammad)?' As for the believer, he will say: 'I bear witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' It will be said to him: 'Look at your place in the Hellfire; Allah has replaced it for you with a place in Paradise.' So he will see both of them. But as for the hypocrite and the disbeliever, it will be said to him: 'What did you say about this man?' He will say: 'I do not know; I used to say what the people said.' It will be said to him: 'You neither knew nor did you follow.' Then, he will be struck with iron hammers, and he will let out a cry that will be heard by everyone around him except humans and jinn." [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, and Muslim narrated a similar version).
