It is narrated from him (al-Hasan, RA) as a mursal hadith, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about two men from the Children of Israel. One was a scholar who prayed the obligatory prayers, then sat to teach people goodness, and the other was one who fasted during the day and prayed at night. Which of the two was superior? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied: "The superiority of the scholar who prays the obligatory prayers and then sits to teach people goodness is over the worshiper who fasts during the day and prays at night, as my superiority over the lowest among you."

٢٣٤ - وَعَنْهُ مُرْسَلًا قَالَ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ رَجُلَيْنِ كَانَا فِي بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، أَحَدُهُمَا: كَانَ عَالِمًا يُصَلِّي الْمَكْتُوبَةَ، ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ فَيُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ الْخَيْرَ، وَالْآخَرُ: يَصُوْمُ النَّهَارَ وَيَقُوْمُ اللَّيْلَ أَيُّهُمَا أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ : فَضْلُ هَذَا الْعَالِمِ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي الْمَكْتُوبَةَ، ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ فَيُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ الْخَيْرَ عَلَى الْعَابِدِ الَّذِي يَصُوْمُ النَّهَارَ وَيَقُوْمُ اللَّيْلَ، كَفَضْلِي عَلَى أَدْنَاكُمْ». رَوَاهُ الدَّارِمِيُّ.

حسن بصری رضی اللہ عنہ سے بطور ارسال روایت ہے انہوں نے کہا کہ رسول اللہ
صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے دو آدمیوں کے متعلق دریافت کیا گیا جو بنی اسرائیل میں سے تھے، ایک تو عالم تھا
جو فرض نماز پڑھ کر لوگوں میں دین اور علم کی تعلیم کے لئے بیٹھ جاتا تھا اور دوسرا شخص ہمیشہ دن میں روزہ
رکھتا اور تمام رات نماز میں گزارتا، ان میں سے کون افضل ہے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا:
اس عالم کی فضیلت جو فرض نماز پڑھ کر لوگوں کو دین اور علم سکھانے کے لئے بیٹھتا ہے اس عابد پر جو دن
میں روزے رکھتا اور رات میں نمازیں پڑھتا ہے ایسی ہے جیسی میری فضیلت تمہارے ادنیٰ شخص پر
