Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, “What is this day you are fasting?” They replied, “This is a great day on which Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted it out of gratitude, so we fast it.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “We are more deserving of Musa than you,” so he fasted it and commanded others to fast it.
