Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"Stoning is an odd number (of pebbles), the millstone of a donkey is an odd number, Sa'i is an odd number, Tawaf is an odd number. When you stone, do so with an odd number."

Note 1
(1) "An odd number": The recommendation isn't strictly three pebbles, though it's preferable. The command to use odd numbers indicates recommendation, not obligation, as there's no evidence of strict requirement. (Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar)
