Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Breastfeeding that establishes prohibition is only that which occurs within the first two years”. 1
Daraqutni said that no one besides Haytham ibn Jamil transmitted this report from Ibn Uyaynah with an uninterrupted chain. He was, however, trustworthy and a reliable memoriser.

وَقَالَ: لَمْ يُسْئِدْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ غَيْرُ الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ جَمِيلٍ، وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ حَافِظٌ.

Note 1
Regarding the statement, “Breastfeeding that establishes prohibition is only that which occurs within the first two years”, according to Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him), the breastfeeding period is thirty months, whereas his two companions held that it is two years. This is also the position of Shafi‘i, Malik and Ahmad. The position of the two companions is more correct and is supported by Tashih al-Quduri. It was also preferred by Tahaawi, as mentioned in al-Hidayah, al-Durr al-Mukhtar and al-Ta‘liq al-Mumajjad. This information has been excerpted from these works.
