Note 1

It is not a medicine but a disease

(1) The statement: It is not a medicine but a disease: In Al-Alamgiriyya: It is not permissible to treat a wound or an animal’s sore with wine, nor to give it to a sick person or child for treatment, and woe to whoever administers it. As in Al-Hidaya. In Al-Mabsut: From Ibn Mas’ud, a man came to him with jaundice and said: I was prescribed sakar. Abdullah said: Allah didn’t place your cure in what He forbade. We follow this, saying: Every forbidden drink is not permissible for treatment. It was narrated from Muhammad that a man asked permission to drink wine for treatment. He said: If you have jaundice, use sakar water; if you have moisture, use honey water, as it’s more beneficial. This indicates that necessity isn’t fulfilled by the forbidden, as a permissible alternative exists, achieving the purpose. This is supported by the Prophet’s saying (ﷺ): Allah didn’t place healing in defilement. He didn’t deny healing entirely, as it may be observed, and the Prophet’s statement can’t be false. The intent is that defilement isn’t designated for healing when a permissible alternative exists or is stronger.
