Ghalib narrated: “We were sitting at the door of Al-Hasan al-Basri when a man came and said, ‘My father narrated to me from my grandfather, who said: My father sent me to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, “Go to him and convey my greeting of peace.” I went to him and said, 1 “My father conveys to you the greeting of peace.” He replied, 2 “Upon you be peace and upon your father be peace.”’”

(1) His statement: “I said, ‘My father conveys to you the greeting of peace’”: It is said in Al-Alamgiriyyah: “If someone is instructed to convey a greeting of peace to another, it is obligatory to do so.” As stated in Al-Ghayathiyyah.

(2) His statement: “He replied, ‘Upon you be peace and upon your father be peace’”: It is said in Radd al-Muhtar: “Sharh al-Tahfat al-Aqran states: It is recommended to respond to the conveyor as well, saying, ‘And upon you and upon him be peace.’ Ibn Abbas said it is obligatory. However, At-Tatarkhaniyyah states: Muhammad narrated a Hadith indicating that one who conveys a greeting from an absent person must first respond to the conveyor and then to the absent person. This implies obligation, so reflect.”
