And from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We, the community of prophets, have been commanded to hasten our Iftar, delay our Suhoor, and place our right hands over our left hands in prayer.” [Narrated by At-Tabarani with a authentic chain and At-Tayalisi] In a narration by Muslim, from Wa’il ibn Hujr: He saw the Prophet ﷺ place his right hand over his left hand.

Hadith 1085

Volume 1

English

And from Sahl ibn Sa’d, who said: The people were commanded that a man should place his right hand over his left forearm in prayer. [Narrated by Al-Bukhari] In a narration by Al-Nasa’i, from Wa’il ibn Hujr, who said: I said to myself, “I will observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to see how he prays.” So I observed him. He stood, said the Takbir, and raised his hands until they were level with his ears. Then he placed his right hand over the back of his left hand, wrist, and forearm. Our scholars said: The Sunnah is to combine placing and grasping, reconciling what has been mentioned in the narrations. In some narrations, there is mention of grasping, in others, placing one hand over the other, and in others, placing the hand on the forearm. The method of reconciliation is to place the right palm over the left palm, form a circle with the thumb and little finger around the wrist, and extend the remaining three fingers over the forearm. This fulfills the descriptions of placing the hand over the hand, over the forearm, and grasping the left hand with the right hand. The foundational principle is that whenever it is possible to reconcile two seemingly contradictory matters, one should not abandon either of them. This is mentioned in Al-Halbi and Al-Muhtar.
