Sharik ibn Shihab narrated: I wished to meet a Companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) to ask about the Khawarij. I met Abu Barzah on a holiday with some of his companions and said: “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mention the Khawarij?” He said: “Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with my ears and saw him with my eyes. Wealth was brought to him, and he distributed it, giving to those on his right and left but not to those behind him. A man from behind him stood and said: ‘O Muhammad, you have not been just in distribution,’ a dark man with matted hair, wearing two white garments. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) became very angry and said: ‘By Allah, you will not find after me a man more just than I.’ Then he said: ‘A people will emerge in the end times, as if this man is one of them. They read the Quran, but it does not pass their throats. They pass through Islam as an arrow passes through a target. Their sign is shaving. They will continue to appear until their last emerges with the Dajjal. When you meet them, kill them; they are the worst of creation.’”
