سیدنا حسن بصری رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سیدنا سمرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے
روایت کرتے ہیں کہ انہوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: حسب2 (یعنی دنیا والوں
میں عزت کی چیز) مال ہے اور کرم (اللہ کے پاس عزت کی چیز) تقویٰ ہے۔ (ترمذی، ابن ماجہ)۔

(1) His statement: “Status is wealth…”: The commentator said: Status is what one counts as the glories of his ancestors, and nobility is the opposite of baseness. It means that what makes a man great in people’s eyes is wealth, and what makes him great with Allah is God-consciousness. Boasting about ancestors is neither. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

(۱) قوله: الحسب المال إلخ : قال شارح الحسب ما يعده من مفاخر آبائه، والكرم ضد اللؤم، فقيل : معناه الشيء الذي يكون به الرجل عظيم القدر عند الناس هو المال، والشيء الذي يكون به عظيم القدر عند الله التقوى، والافتخار بالآباء ليس بشيء منهما. كذا في «المرقاة».
