Note 1

This means that performing Friday prayer in congregation is a condition, as agreed upon, though there is disagreement about the number required. According to Abu Hanifah and Muhammad, it is three men besides the Imam. Abu Yusuf said it is sufficient with the Imam, as two people with the Imam constitute a congregation. Others said that congregation and the Imam are separate conditions, so a group besides the Imam is required. This is based on the verse: ‘When the call is made for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah...’ (Qur’an 62:9), which implies a caller (Mu’adhin) and a leader (Imam), and at least two people responding, as the word ‘hasten’ does not apply to fewer than two. Additionally, fewer than three is not considered a congregation in linguistic terms. The condition of congregation is absolute here. Al-Shafi’i required the presence of forty free, adult, resident men who hear the sermon, based on Jabir’s narration: ‘The Sunnah is that every three people have an Imam, and every forty or more have Friday and Eid prayers.’ However, this narration is weak, and Al-Bayhaqi said: ‘It is not a proof.’ This is mentioned in Sharh al-Nuqayah.
