Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was sitting 1 when Ali and Al-Abbas came seeking permission. They said: “O Usamah, request permission for us from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, Ali and Al-Abbas seek permission.” He said: “Do you know what brings them?” I said: “No.” He said: “But I do. Grant them permission.” They entered and said: “O Messenger of Allah, we came to ask you who among your household is most beloved to you?” He said: “Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad.” They said: “We didn’t come to ask about your household.” He said: “The most beloved of my household to me is the one whom Allah has favored and I have favored, Usamah ibn Zayd.” They said: “Then who?” He said: “Then Ali 2 ibn Abi Talib.” Al-Abbas said: “O Messenger of Allah, you made your uncle the last of them?” He said: “Because Ali preceded you in migration.”

Note 1
(1) The statement “I was sitting”: Meaning, at his door. The statement “we didn’t come to ask about your household”: Meaning, about your wives and children, but about your relatives and associates. The statement “whom Allah has favored”: Meaning, with Islam, guidance, and honor, “and I have favored”: Meaning, with emancipation, adoption, and upbringing. Though this was said about Zayd, his son follows him in receiving these favors. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 2
(2) The statement “then Ali ibn Abi Talib”: This is evidence that greater love does not necessitate greater superiority, as Ali is superior to Usamah and Zayd by consensus. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 1
Note 2
