Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Three are loved by Allah, and three are hated by Allah. Those loved by Allah are: a man who comes to a people and asks them by Allah, not by any kinship between him and them, but they refuse him, so a man stays behind and gives him secretly, so that no one knows of his gift except Allah and the one who gave it; a people who travel at night until sleep becomes dearer to them than anything else, so they stop and rest, and one of them stands and flatters me and recites My verses; and a man who is in a military expedition, and his companions flee, but he faces the enemy until he is killed or victory is achieved. The three hated by Allah are: the old adulterer, the poor show-off, and the oppressive rich man.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to enter it and drink from its good water. Anas said: When the verse You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love (Al-Imran 3:92) was revealed, Abu Talhah went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah says: You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love (Al-Imran 3:92), and the dearest of my wealth to me is Bayruha’. It is a charity for Allah, and I hope for its reward and treasure with Allah. Place it, O Messenger of Allah, where Allah shows you." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Well done! That is a profitable wealth. I have heard what you said about it, and I think you should give it to your relatives." Abu Talhah said, "I will do so, O Messenger of Allah." So Abu Talhah distributed it among his relatives and cousins.

Hadith 2403

Volume 1

English

Rabitah bint ‘Abdullah, the wife of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), reported: She was a skilled woman from Sana’a, and ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud had no wealth. She used to spend on him and their children from her earnings. She said, "By Allah, you and your children have kept me so busy that I cannot give charity." He said, "I do not like that you should not have a reward for what you do." So she and her family asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am a skilled woman, and I sell from my work. My children and husband have nothing, and they keep me so busy that I cannot give charity. Do I get a reward for spending on them?" He said, "You will be rewarded for what you spend on them, so spend on them."
Commentary and footnotes (3)

Note 1

A woman from Sana’a

(1) The statement: "A woman from Sana’a" etc. In Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar, it is said: "This indicates that the charity mentioned was voluntary and not obligatory. Rabitah was Zainab, the wife of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud. It is not known that ‘Abdullah had another wife during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The evidence that this charity was voluntary is her statement: 'I was a skilled woman, and I used to sell from my work and spend on ‘Abdullah.' The response of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in this hadith and the previous one was in answer to her question. In this hadith of Rabitah, it is mentioned: 'I used to spend from that on ‘Abdullah and his children.' It is unanimously agreed that a woman cannot spend her Zakat on her children. Since what she spent on her children was not from Zakat, similarly, what she spent on her husband was also not from Zakat."

Note 1

Note 1

Note 1

The one whose door is closer to you

(1) The statement: "The one whose door is closer to you" refers to the neighbor whose house is adjacent to yours, according to the opinion of Abu Hanifah. Others said: "The one who lives in your neighborhood and shares the same mosque with you." This is considered the most appropriate view. Al-Shafi’i said: "The neighbor includes up to forty houses in every direction." The correct opinion is that of the Imam, as mentioned in Al-Durr al-Muntaqa, and clarified by Al-‘Allamah Qasim. This is the analogy. Among the rights of a neighbor is not to forget them in food, drink, and clothing, and to assist them in every difficulty. If one can feed them, they should do so; otherwise, they should not let the effects of cooking, such as smoke, be seen, as it may cause them distress. This is the summary of what is mentioned in Al-Tafsirat al-Ahmadiyyah and Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar in the book of Wills. This is why ‘Ali al-Qari said in Al-Mirqat: "Perhaps the reason is that they are more connected and more aware, making them more deserving of good companionship and visible kindness." Allah says: And do good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side (Al-Nisa 4:36). This indicates that the closer neighbor is more deserving of kindness, but it does not mean that giving is restricted to the closest neighbor, as is apparent from the hadith.

Asked in the name of Allah

(1) The statement: "Asked in the name of Allah" in Al-Mukhtarat, it is said: Ibn al-Mubarak said, "If someone asks for the sake of Allah or for the right of Allah, I prefer not to give them anything, as they have elevated what Allah has made insignificant." This is understood to apply when the need is not known. I say: One should consider the prohibition along with what our teacher Al-Jarahi mentioned from Al-Tabarani with a chain of narrators who are reliable, from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Cursed is the one who asks in the name of Allah, and cursed is the one who is asked in the name of Allah and then refuses, unless the request is inappropriate." This is the summary of what is in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar.

Note 1

When she spends.

(1) The statement: "When she spends." In Al-Mirqat, it is said: "The scholars have generally agreed that it is not permissible for a woman to give charity from her husband's wealth without his explicit or implicit permission. Similarly, a servant is not allowed to do so. The hadith that indicates permissibility is based on the custom of the people of Hijaz, who would allow family members and servants to give charity and spend when a beggar arrives or a guest is present." This is what Al-Sharif Al-Jurjani said in the commentary of Al-Mishkat. Al-Allamah Al-Ayni said in Umdat Al-Qari: "The hadiths in this chapter differ. The way to reconcile them is that it varies according to the customs of different regions, the husband's attitude—whether he is lenient and approves or dislikes it—and the nature of what is spent, whether it is something insignificant that he would overlook or something significant that he would not tolerate. It also depends on whether the item is perishable and might spoil if delayed or something that can be stored without fear of spoilage."
