Narrated Al-Muhajir ibn Qunfudh: He came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was relieving himself, and he greeted him. The Prophet did not respond until he performed ablution, and then he apologized, saying, "I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity." [Narrated by Abu Dawood and Al-Nasa'i, and the latter included the phrase "until he performed ablution." When he did, the Prophet responded to his greeting.
Our scholars have concluded that ablution for general remembrance of Allah is recommended. Leaving it is contrary to what is preferred, and it is considered disliked (makruh) in terms of detesting the action.

٥٢٩ - وَعَنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ بْنِ قُنْفُةٍ : أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَبُوْلُ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ، حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ ، ثُمَّ اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِ، وَقَالَ: «إِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَ اللهَ إِلَّا عَلَى طُهْرٍ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ، وَرَوَى النَّسَائِيُّ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ : حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ»، وَقَالَ: فَلَمَّا تَوَضَّأَ رَدَّ عَلَيْهِ.
قَالَ عُلَمَاؤُنَا: فَثَبَتَ بِهَذِهِ الْأَحَادِيثِ أَنَّ الْوُضُوءَ لِمُطْلَقِ الذِّكْرِ مَنْدُوْبُ، وَتَرْكَهُ خِلافُ الْأَوْلَى، وَهُوَ مَرْجِعُ كَرَاهَةِ التَّنْزِيهِ.

خدمت میں ایسے وقت حاضر ہوئے کہ حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پیشاب کر رہے تھے، انہوں نے حضور صلی
اللہ علیہ وسلم کو سلام کیا تو آپ نے وضو فرما لینے تک سلام کا جواب نہیں دیا، اس کے بعد آپ نے ان
سے عذر بیان کیا اور فرمایا کہ میں نے بغیر وضوء کے ذکر الٰہی پسند نہیں کیا۔ (اس کی روایت ابوداؤد نے
کی ہے اور نسائی نے حَتّٰى تَوَضَّأَ (یعنی آپ نے وضوء کیا) تک روایت کی ہے اور اپنی سند میں یہ اضافہ
کیا ہے کہ مہاجر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وضوء فرمایا اور اس کے بعد سلام کا
جواب دیا۔
